Invisalign treatment at Faber Orthodontics: How, exactly, does it work? [Video]
We've discussed Invisalign treatment in the past, and thought we'd share with you a helpful video that walks you through the process of Invisalign a bit "clearer."
The Invisalign system at Faber Orthodontics is a state-of-the-art system of clear, removable aligners that we proudly offer at our offices in Tappahannock and Kilmarnock. Dr. Beth is a Certified Invisalign Provider, offering Invisalign for teens and adults.
Here's how it works: You wear each set of aligners for about two weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move — little by little, week by week — until they have straightened to the final position Dr. Beth has prescribed. You'll visit our office about once every 6 weeks to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned. Total treatment time averages 9-15 months and the average number of aligners worn during treatment is between 18 and 30, but both will vary from case to case.
If you've been wanting to straighten your teeth but are unsure about going through traditional orthodontic treatment, please give us a call to learn if Invisalign is the right option for you!
Enjoy the rest of the week everybody!

Ask Faber Orthodontics: Do germs live on toothbrushes?
Fall is here, and with it the dreaded cold and flu season. After recovering from your cold, Dr. Beth and our team at Faber Orthodontics will tell you one of the most important steps you can take to avoid becoming reinfected is replacing your toothbrush!
Germs can linger on the bristles, and you risk prolonging your sickness by continuing to use the same toothbrush. Be smart - keep a spare, just in case! To protect your toothbrush from bacteria all year long, consider the following tips:
• Wash your hands before and after brushing
• Allow the brush to air dry after each use, harmful bacteria dies after being exposed to oxygen
• Store the toothbrush in an upright position to allow water to drain and dry faster
• Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months. Worn bristles are less effective in properly cleaning your teeth, and can actually be damaging to teeth if used too long!
Hope this tip helps! Feel free to call us in Tappahannock or Kilmarnock if you have any questions or ask us on Facebook.

Dr. Beth Faber and team want to know: How was your Halloween?
Happy November, everybody! Believe it or not, we’re almost in full holiday mode! But before Dr. Beth Faber and our team forget about the spooky month that was, we’d like to know how you celebrated Halloween! What did you wear? How much candy did you get? Did you have fun?
If you have any photos or videos from Halloween night that you would like to share with us, please send them our way or feel free to post them on our Facebook page! We hope you all had a happy and safe Halloween! Also, what are you up to this month? Anything exciting happening in your life? If so, we’d love to hear all about it.
Lastly, have you been in for a dental checkup lately? It’s important that you see your general dentist, as well as visiting Faber Orthodontics during your orthodontic treatment. Ask Faber Orthodontics: What's the deal with Halloween treats?
For parents worried about kids going overboard on candies, sugar and other sweets, Halloween is a dreaded annual event.
All those sweet, sour and sticky candies may taste great, but these treats are known to damage teeth, as well as braces! Did you know sour candies can be acidic to your teeth, and actually wear down the enamel that protects them? This can cause tooth decay and cavities! Sour and fruity candy, such as Starburst and Skittles, are the worst for your child’s teeth since these candies have a low pH value, which can ruin enamel. In addition, Dr. Beth Faber and our staff also want you to stay away from sticky, chewy, gummy and nutty treats.
So what's a parent to do?
As Halloween draws nearer, try to limit the amount of these candies that your child eats, and when your child does eat them, either have him or her rinse their mouth with water afterward or have them drink some milk or eat a slice of cheese. Lastly, we encourage you to check out these braces-friendly Halloween treats, provided by the AAO.
Hope this helps!

Protect your braces this Halloween season!
Check out our "birthday board" for the month of October!
And remember, all those sweet, sour and sticky candies may taste great, but these treats can damage your teeth and braces too! Did you know sour candies can be acidic to your teeth, and actually wear down the enamel that protects them? This can cause tooth decay and cavities! After eating these candies, be sure to wash your mouth out with water, drink milk or eat a few slices of cheese. These will help neutralize the acid in your mouth (wait at least one hour before brushing your teeth with toothpaste, as this can actually increase the effects of acid on your teeth)
Try these delicious and braces-friendly recipes instead!

At Faber Orthodontics, October means National Orthodontic Health Month!
Happy Friday! Today marks the start of National Orthodontic Health Month, and our staff at Faber Orthodontics wanted to remind our patients to be careful when they bite into their treats this Halloween season. Remember, caramels, taffy, nuts, bubble gum, popcorn kernels and suckers are some of the foods you should be avoiding! Indulging in these foods can break your braces and lengthen your treatment time!
Of course, Halloween doesn’t have to be completely treat-less. Check out these delicious braces-friendly recipes, courtesy of our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists!
If you have any questions, please feel free to give us a call at (804) 443-6419, ask us on Facebook or ask Dr. Beth during your next visit to our office in Tappahannock or Kilmarnock!
Enjoy the weekend!

"My daughter is seven years old - when should I bring her in for a consultation?"
Great question! Dr. Beth Faber will tell you that braces were originally considered to be best appropriate for teens. But these days, kids as old as seven are beginning their orthodontic treatment. Because preadolescent kids are typically not self-conscious, our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists suggest it could be a good idea to start early.
Experts, however, say it depends on the treatment required. Some children who get braces at an early age end up in a second phase of treatment, and end up having braces well into their teenage years despite starting young.
Most orthodontic treatment begins between ages nine and 14, and the folks at AAO estimate most orthodontic treatment lasts from one to three years, with two years being the average. It’s important, however, that children be screened no later than age seven for Dr. Beth and our staff to assess what the best age for treatment is.
We hope this helps! Please give us a call if you have any questions about your child’s treatment and have yourself a wonderful and relaxing weekend!!

Back to school with Dr. Beth Faber
With many of the schools in Tappahannock and Kilmarnock back in session, Dr. Beth Faber and our staff would like to remind all of our patients about the importance of scheduling appointments in advance. With school, clubs and sports to consider, we know that it can be challenging to find time to visit Faber Orthodontics this fall. In order to accommodate all of our patients' busy schedules, it is important that you plan ahead for your appointments so that we are able to provide you with an appointment time that is convenient for you.
As always, please remember to give us advanced notice if you're unable to make your regularly-scheduled appointment. If we receive enough notice, we might be able to schedule another patient for that time. Feel free to give us a call at (804) 443-6419 if you have any questions, or if you would like to schedule your fall appointment.
Have a great week, and we look forward to seeing you!

The importance of mouth guards, from Dr. Beth Faber
With summer here for another seven weeks or so, Dr. Beth Faber and our entire staff would like to take this time to remind all our young athletes in orthodontic treatment to take care of both your mouth and appliances while participating in contact sports (and non-contact sports) this summer. Remember, only by using a mouth guard can kids with and without braces avoid serious sports injuries. The next time you're in for a visit with Dr. Beth, be sure to ask her for a mouth guard!
Have a fun and enjoyable weekend, and we hope you're having a wonderful summer!

Talking retainers with Dr. Beth Faber
Have you recently completed treatment at Faber Orthodontics? If so, our entire staff would like to congratulate you again! Job well done! Now that your braces have been removed, Dr. Beth Faber will provide retainers for you, which you'll wear every day, right? After braces are removed, Dr. Beth will you teeth may shift out of position if they are not stabilized. Retainers, however, provide that stabilization, and are designed to hold teeth in their corrected, ideal positions until the bones and gums adapt to the treatment changes. Wearing retainers exactly as instructed by Dr. Beth is the best insurance that the treatment improvements last for a lifetime.
Remember to:
* Wear your retainers full time, until the doctor instructs otherwise.
* Take your retainers out when eating… and always put retainers in their case! (Most appliances are lost in school lunch rooms or restaurants.)
* Clean retainers thoroughly once a day with a toothbrush and toothpaste. Use warm but not hot water. Brushing retainers removes the plaque, and eliminates odors. Efferdent® or other orthodontic appliance cleaners can be used, but do not take the place of brushing.
* When retainers are not in your mouth they should ALWAYS be in a retainer case. Pets love to chew on them!
* Initially, you may find it difficult to speak. Practice speaking, reading, or singing out loud to get used to them faster.
* Retainers are breakable, so treat them with care. If retainers are lost or broken call us immediately.
* If you have any questions or concerns about your retainers, or your retainers need adjusting, call us. Do not try to adjust them yourself.
* Always bring your retainers to your appointments.
* Retainer replacement is expensive… with proper care they will last for years!
* Remove retainers when swimming.
* Keep retainers away from hot water, hot car dashboards, pockets, the washing machine, and napkins.
To learn more more about the advantages of wearing retainers after your orthodontic treatment, please read this helpful article about retainers from KidsHealth. Happy Monday everyone!!

Patriotic fun facts with Dr. Beth!
On Sunday, Dr. Beth and our staff at Faber Orthodontics will be busy celebrating America's 234th birthday. And because we know our patients love fun facts, we thought we'd provide you with some fun facts about Independence Day!
- Independence Day was first celebrated in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776.
- An estimated 2.5 million people lived in America in July 1776. Today, an estimated 309 million people reside in the United States.
- The major objection to being ruled by Britain was taxation without representation, which meant that people didn't want to be taxed by a government that did not represent them.
- In 1941, Congress declared 4th of July a federal legal holiday. It is one of the few federal holidays that have not been moved to the nearest Friday or Monday.
- The stars on the original American flag were arranged in a circle to ensure that all colonies were equal.
- America's mascot, the bald eagle, can achieve speeds of up to 200 miles per hour when making a predatory dive. During a normal flight, bald eagles can travel up to 30 miles per hour.
- The American flag patch is backwards on U.S. Army uniforms. The reason? The blue field on the flag (the part with the stars) faces forward to symbolize carrying the American flag into battle.
- Someone who specializes in the history of flags is called a vexillologist.
- The word ‘patriotism’ comes from the Latin patria, which means ‘homeland’ or ‘fatherland.’
- According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, Americans consume over 150 million hot dogs during their Independence Day festivities.
- Speaking of food, there's a 1-in-6 chance the beef on your backyard this Independence Day weekend grill came from Texas. The Lone Star State is America's leader in the production of cattle and calves.
Have a great Fourth of July weekend everyone, and we'll see you next week!!

Ask Dr. Faber: Am I too old for orthodontic treatment?
Of course not! At Faber Orthodontics, nobody, and we mean, NOBODY, is "too old" to straighten their teeth!
In fact, Dr. Beth Faber and our staff recently came across a fascinating statistic: the number of adults getting braces has actually climbed 24 percent since 1996! Yes, braces help make your pearly whites strong, healthy and perfectly-aligned, but perhaps another reason for the spike in adult braces is this: folks want to look and feel great. In an age—and society—where looks matter as much as anything, and at a time when evenly-aligned and sparkling teeth might be the difference between getting a job or a promotion, adults are choosing—very wisely, we might add—to invest in orthodontics. Orthodontic treatment with Dr. Faber can be successful at any age, and adults especially appreciate the benefits of a beautiful smile.
If you’ve been thinking about getting that perfect smile, Dr. Faber would love to have you visit for a complimentary consultation. Please give us a call at (804) 443-6419 to set one up!

Dr. Beth Faber, distinguishing the myths and facts about orthodontics
Trust us when we say Dr. Beth Faber and our staff know there are quite a few myths about orthodontics (and orthodontists) flying around these days. But before you start buying into those myths, we think you should get the facts! We came across a great site that helps set the record straight (no pun intended). Our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists have some excellent information on the myths and facts of orthodontics. We encourage you to check them out today!
If you have any questions about orthodontics or your treatment here at Faber Orthodontics, feel free to give us a call at (804) 443-6419.
One last thing: we hope you and your loved ones have a safe and relaxing Memorial Day weekend!

SureSmile treatment at Faber Orthodontics
Does the thought of having braces bring you down? Our team at Faber Orthodontics understands that one of the biggest concerns for orthodontic patients with braces is the length of their treatment.
But you’re in luck, because Dr. Beth Faber specializes in SureSmile, high-tech braces that are revolutionizing the orthodontic industry. SureSmile, which combines digital 3-D imaging, has computer-aided treatment planning and customized archwires to straighten teeth about 40 percent faster than traditional braces. The SureSmile program calculates the exact shape and pattern of the teeth and bends and cuts the braces wires, with more precision than traditional braces.
This week, CNN's own Dr. Sanjay Gupta filed a short report on SureSmile, which is becoming quite popular with our patients. We encourage you to check out the video and let us know what you think! Give us a call!

Invisalign® treatment at Faber Orthodontics: What's the advantage?
Are you wondering what Invisalign treatment is really like, and what effect it will have on your day-to-day activities? Will it slur your speech? Will people know you're in treatment? You're not alone in your concerns! Dr. Beth Faber and our team thought we’d take a moment and discuss these clear aligners today.
To find out if you are the right candidate for Invisalign treatment at Faber Orthodontics, the first thing we do is to take an impression of your teeth as they are now - and digitize it. Using special software, Dr. Faber looks at the current positioning of your teeth and compares it to the way your teeth should look.
Next, we use special software to map out the exact path your teeth will take from the beginning of your treatment to the end. Based on the results, a set of custom aligners are created just for your teeth. Throughout the course of treatment, you will be required to wear these clear, removable aligners one at a time; each one moving your teeth closer and closer to their final, perfectly aligned position. The best thing about it all? Nobody around you will even know you are wearing braces!
Dr. Faber is a Certified Invisalign® Provider. If you have questions about Invisalign, or would like to find out if you are a candidate for Invisalign treatment, please give us a call at our Kilmarnock or Tappahannock office.

Ask Dr. Faber: When should my kid come in for a check-up?
Dr. Faber will tell you that many parents in Kilmarnock and Tappahannock assume they must wait until their child has all of his or her permanent teeth to visit Faber Orthodontics for a consultation, only to discover treatment would have been much easier if started sooner. Did you know the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child have an orthodontic check-up no later than age seven?
That’s right—seven.
Ok, so what’s so great about age seven, you ask? Enough permanent teeth have arrived for Dr. Faber to make a determination about whether any problems are present. The first molars have come in, providing an opportunity to check for malocclusion, or what Dr. Faber calls “bad bite.” Also, the incisors have begun to come in, and problems such as crowding, deep bites and open bites can be detected.
Early evaluation, of course, may signal a need for early treatment. For some children, early treatment can prevent physical and emotional trauma. Aside from spurring on years of harmful teasing, misaligned teeth are also prone to injury and are detrimental to good oral hygiene. So, if your child is nearing his or her seventh birthday, give us a call at Faber Orthodontics to schedule an appointment.
Have a great weekend!

While Dr. Faber and our staff take a little time to research how to best use social media, we thought we’d ask you, our loyal patients: How would you like us to use our social networks? What would you like us to share on our blog? Please post your thoughts here or on our Facebook page!

Ask Dr. Faber: Why is it so important to have straight teeth?
Some people wonder why Tappahannock and Kilmarnock orthodontist Dr. Beth Faber and our team work tirelessly to give our patients straight teeth. Of course it’s nice to have a smile full of evenly aligned teeth, but did you know that straightening your teeth at Faber Orthodontics can keep them healthier? Straight teeth lead to better oral hygiene, increasing your chances of keeping your own natural teeth for a lifetime!
Straight teeth are less prone to decay, because they collect less plaque—the sticky colorless substance that forms on our teeth and leads to tooth decay; and they are easier to keep clean! Receiving orthodontic care is a personal choice; and at Faber Orthodontics, we like to keep your treatment personal by providing you with customized treatment plans, individual time spent with your orthodontist, and a smile that reflects who you are! We have been helping to create healthy, beautiful smiles in the community for over 23 years.
If you’re wondering whether your teeth might cause problems because they are out of alignment, please give us a call to set up a complimentary consultation. Dr. Faber can help you decide whether or not you will benefit from orthodontic treatment.

Meet Our Orthodontist
Dr. Beth treats both children and adults and with each treatment comes different rewards. In college, her advanced level psychology courses were in developmental psychology and in orthodontics she gets to participate in her young patients' development. Dr. Beth plays an active role, not only in developing their face and smile, but she also influences the development of their self-esteem. It is her pleasure to experience these young people as they mature into young adults while in treatment. Working with adult patients allows her to help them create a healthy bite and beautiful smile that they love to show off, as well as cultivating a personal relationship during this process. In both cases, seeing each patient finish treatment with a beautiful smile, with a healthy bite and seeing the pride and confidence that their new smile provides is the ultimate reward.
Dr. Beth's academic accolades started in high school. She was Salutatorian of the first graduating class of Trinity High School in Richmond, Va. She completed her undergraduate studies at the College of William and Mary where she graduated with a double major in Chemistry and Psychology. While in college, Dr. Beth was a competitive swimmer on the swim team and a member of the synchronized swim team. After college, she completed four years of dental school, graduating from the Medical College of Virginia. From there she chose to specialize in orthodontics and spent two years in advanced training in orthodontics. She received her Certificate and her Masters Degree in Orthodontics from the University of Detroit. For one year Dr. Beth was and associate in a two doctor practice in Toledo, Ohio. In 1986 she opened her own practice in Tappahannock, Virginia. Six years later she opened her second office in Kilmarnock, Virginia.
Dr. Beth enjoys reading and cooking. Nicholas Sparks is one of her favorite authors, but her membership in a monthly book club leads her to all kinds of literature. Cooking with her children and preparing their favorite dishes is her most special activity. Molasses cookies, brownies, meat balls are just a few of her specialties. As a member of Fairmont Christian Church, Dr. Beth is active in both a women's bible study and the Reflections of Him Sunday school class. Professionally she is actively involved in the national, regional, state and local orthodontic associations. Currently, Dr. Beth is one of only nine doctors who serve on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Association of Orthodontist and she has been a requested speaker at several national meetings.
